Breathwork. What is it?
There are many types of Breathwork or Pranayama practices. The type of Breathwork that I practice and facilitate is an active breathing meditation, sometimes referred to as a two-part breath. The entire practice is done lying down, so the ‘active’ part is referring to the breathing itself as it requires some effort and about 5 to 7 minutes (for most folks) to really get into a flow. Once you get the hang of it though, it gets easier and becomes more rhythmic, the idea being that you’re able to get out of your mind and get into your body.
In other words, this type of breathing meditation is intended to be fully embodied and felt.
There are many types of meditation that work to help the meditator focus the mind or observe patterns of thought. This type of breathing meditation is a little different from what might be called ‘seated meditation’ or ‘mindfulness’ techniques, in that the intention is to feel our feelings, let the sensations move through the body without interpreting or analyzing, and to let intuition and spirit guide rather than the intellect.
